~ Chapter 13 ~

“Mommy!” Julia squealed as she raced toward the front door.

Karli smiled down at her daughter and picked the toddler up onto her hip.

“Hi, princess,” she said, kissing the girl’s forehead.

She was greeted in a similar fashion by the other kids as she stepped into the living room.

“Where’s mama?” asked James.

“She’ll be home soon, son. So will your mom and dad, Daniel,” she assured.

“Jess is making tacos,” Kaylie said excitedly.

Karli’s face took on an expression of playful shock and she widened her eyes.

“Tacos?” she asked, “boy are you guys lucky!”

The children giggled and Karli set Julia down next to Kaylie before walking into the kitchen.

“Oh, it smells yummy in here,” she commented, making Jess jump.

“What are you doing home? I thought you were going to be out until seven?” Jess frowned as she looked at the clock, confirming for herself that it was only five-thirty.

Karli shrugged and avoided Jess’ inquisitive look. Popping a slice of avocado into her mouth, she said, “I missed my babies, that’s all.”

“Bullshit,” Jess commented.

Karli fixed a look of confusion on her features and looked at the woman.

“You and Jaymes had a fight, didn’t you?” Jess asked.

Karli looked away and chuckled in embarrassment. “That obvious?”

Jess shook her head, “You had the same look of irritation on your face last week when you two argued on the porch.”

Karli’s cheeks pinked and she shrugged her shoulders. “It’ll pass, it always does.”

Jess transferred the finished taco meat to a casserole dish and set it in the oven to keep warm. “Want to talk about it?” she asked, rinsing the skillet in the sink.

“She told an embarrassing story to Serena and Perry that I asked her not to tell,” Karli summarized, taking a knife from the block and helping Jess with the vegetables.

“Okay,” Jess drew the word out, attempting to get Karli to elaborate.

“I don’t know, Jess, we were having a lot of fun up until that point. We played golf, had drinks, walked through the park. We went to dinner early because we were going to go see a movie before we came home, and Perry and Jaymes were sharing stories about how rough they had it when Serena and I were pregnant. They were trying to one-up each other, and Jaymes picked the one story from all of my pregnancies that would guarantee her the winner.”

Karli chopped as she spoke, her knife moving faster and faster as her anger rekindled.

“Um, Karli?” Jess said, watching the knife dance dangerously close to Karli’s fingertips.

“What?” Karli asked harshly. “Fuck!” she spat when the knife sliced through the tip of her middle finger.

“That’s what I was afraid of,” Jess mumbled, handing Karli the towel she had tucked into her back pocket.

Karli pressed the towel to her hand and went to the sink to inspect the damage. Jess cleared the chopping board into the trash and placed it on the counter to be washed. She grabbed a new knife and board and set them on the island before moving over to check on Karli.
